In the Woods of Lake Maria State Park

I spent a quiet night in the woods this past week in March. I rented a small campers cabin in Lake Maria State Park that was nestled on the shores of a pond. I felt like I was reliving Walden. I found this to be a rewarding experience. Below is the camper cabin in which I stayed:

In front you can see the small pond. I spent a lot of time writing and reflecting on my call and on scriptures. I took time to read through Galatians and Titus. I found a number of things there that were illuminating.
The park, located near Monticello, MN, is beautiful. Though not one of the largest, it is, I think, underrated. Below are a couple of winter picutures.

The frozen pond in evening.

What was particularily restful was watchng the night fall slowly. We are so used to just turning on the light, but without electricity and only a small battery powered lantern, you learn patience and you learn to wait. I wrote until the light was gone, then wrote again after I started my lamp. The light was not room filling, so you tend to stay focused on the task at hand.

I took a few walks in the woods, and the paths were very icy. After I learned in some ways to walk on the ice, it made the journey out a lot easier. The woods in winter has a different beauty. In the summer you walk and you can't see through much of the undergrowth, yet in the winter you can see much farther and see th lay of the land. Lake Maria is a hilly landscape. In the summer, you could never have seen the cabin much less the lake from where I was standing.
