Sanger is located in Oliver County near Cross Ranch State Park on highway 1806 north of Mandan. The
most recognizable feature is the storefront on the west side of the highway. There is a road on the left identified
on maps as "Sawyer Ave" and its a dead end. It does not appear to be on private property. If you pass by the state park entrance
going north and county road 3304 you have gone too far. See map below.
Sanger was founded in 1879 by the brothers George and Charles Sanger. Sanger was the county seat
until 1902 when it was replaced by Center. The current site of Sanger was platted in 1902 and reached a peak population of
100 by 1920. By 1985 the population had dropped to 3. Currently, the townsite is abandoned.
The day we went to Sanger it was wall over 100 degrees. We had looked through about half the town
and started to feel positively ill. We will have to go back when it isn't so oppressive.
It is a little hard to tell what is and isn't private property, so we sent on the assumption if it
wasn't posted, it was okay. To the left of Sawyer Road (the road leading to the houses in back) it is posted, and I remember
there being a fence between us and the storefront. There is nothing posted for the houses in the back.
