Glencoe was also
established in 1883 in the northwest corner of the county, but it was abandoned in 1930. It is considered to be in Emmons County,
but the well known and pictured below Glencoe church is located in Burleigh County.
It was named for Glencoe in Argyllshire, Scotland.
A population of 18 was reported in 1890, and at one time there was a school, dance hall, church, and store. Unless we missed
it, the church is all that is left. Interestingly, when going through the cemetery, my wife’s stepmother found the grave
of one of her relatives she knew as a child.
The church was built in 1889. Looking at the maps and consulting the name place book by Douglas Wick,
though, it is possible that a little south one can see what is left of Glencoe, but further investigation should answer that
question, as it is stated that the church was built just north of the original townsite.
